THE BATTLE OF MEDINA HISTORICAL SYMPOSIUM

Saturday, Aug. 20th 10:00am on Old Applewhite Rd.

Please note the impressive panel of speakers all this and absolutely FREE !

The Atascosa County Historical Commission once again invites the public to attend this free educational and historical Memorial Service to honor those that fought and died in what I call the Rise and Fall of the First Texas Republic . The Battle of Medina was fought on August 18th 1813 and it was the struggle between a tyrannical Spanish government against the Republican Army of the North which consisted of about 900 Tejanos 300 American volunteers and 200 Lipan, Coushatta and Mission Indians. By the time it was over approximately one third of our Tejano Community would be dead, one third would flee to Louisiana and the remaining third would live in terror.

Join us as we honor our ancestors that stood and fought almost to the last man and paid the ultimate price for freedom.

Scheduled to speak: Dr Frank J. de la Teja. The First Official Texas State Historian

Dr Carolina Castillo Crimm Sam Houston State University

Robert Thonhoff, Author, Historian, County Judge

                                 Dan Arellano Author/ Historian

And reenactors dressed in period attire and it is all free( except lunch), do not miss this opportunity.

On Saturday August 20th at 10 AM on Apple White Road there will be a short memorial service with a rifle salute. There will be signs on Roosevelt Road (281 south) to the site. We will assemble at the Atascosa County Annex formerly known as Our Lady of Grace Catholic School for lunch at a modest price after the firing salute.  The symposium is from 1 PM to 5 PM which is at 25 5TH Street in Leming Texas.5th Street is one block south of Verdi Road. Arriving in Leming look for Ricks Drive Inn then immediately turn left on 5th Street . It is the red brick building on the corner of 281 and 5th.
